Summer Reading

I can almost smell the fall season around the corner. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking

Summer is almost over, so I thought I'd share the books I read and enjoyed this blazing hot New Jersey season.

The Screaming Staircase and The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud

I have been loving the Lockwood & Co. books. My last newsletter was all about the first book. I can't wait to finish the series.

Nick and Norah's infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn

This book captures the magical electricity of being a New Jersey teen out late in New York City.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I am late to the Sarah J. Maas party. But better late than never! A friend of mine recommended this to me and now I am hooked on the series.

The Other Normals by Ned Vizzini

As someone who played Warhammer in middle school and high school, this book hit me in the feels. I love Vizzini's writing.

Modern Occultism, Occult America, and The Seeker's Guide to The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Mitch Horowitz

I stumbled across Occult America on the shelf at my library, and immediately fell down the Mitch Horowitz rabbit hole.

An Immense World by Ed Yong

I briefly mentioned this book in a newsletter from earlier this summer. Fascinating.

The Grimmer by Naben Ruthnum

This book was a blast. Creepy and fun. Reminded me of my time working at a record store in high school.

Small Town Monsters by Diana Rodriguez Wallach

Cults freak me out. This books gets it.

When Among Crows by Veronica Roth

I'll read anything Veronica Roth writes. If you loved the Witcher and wished there was something similar but with a more contemporary vibe, this is for you. SO good.

Semi Dual by J.U. Giesy and Junius B. Smith

I came across this cool dude in my occult detective research. Semi Dual was (I'm pretty sure) the first occult detective story written by Americans. There are A LOT of Semi Dual stories. I'm not sure how deep I will go. But I am intrigued.

Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut: classic Vonnegut. Deeply ironic without losing a drop of sincerity.

Currently Reading:

  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han

  • Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

  • Solitaire by Alice Oseman
